Signs It’s Time to Seek a Doctor For Your Back Pain

March 24, 2023

Back pain is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While most cases of back pain can resolve with self-care measures, there are times when you should seek medical attention. Ignoring the signs and symptoms of serious back pain can lead to long-term complications and chronic pain.

When To See A Doctor For Back Pain

Many people suffer from back pain, which can sometimes be extremely uncomfortable and restricting. By recognizing symptoms early on, you can get the help you need to manage your condition effectively.

Here are some warnings that you need medical attention for your back pain.

1. You Experience Severe Or Worsening Pain

You may need medical attention if your back pain:

  • Is severe
  • Does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Worsens over time

2. Pain Comes With Numbness Or Tingling

If you experience numbness or tingling in your legs or arms, it may indicate nerve damage or compression.

3. You Experience A Loss Of Bladder Or Bowel Control

A bladder or bowel control loss may indicate severe conditions such as cauda equina syndrome.

4. You Feel Pain After An Injury

If you experience back pain after a fall, accident, or any other injury, it may indicate a fracture. The sensation may also be a sign of other serious conditions.

5. Your Pain Lasts Longer Than Six Weeks

Back pain that lasts longer than six weeks is considered chronic back pain and may require medical attention.

Various factors, including spinal problems, nerve damage, muscle strain, or underlying medical conditions, can cause chronic back pain.

6. Your Pain Radiates Down The Legs

Back pain that radiates down the legs is known as sciatica, caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down to the legs. When it is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the legs.

7. You Experience Leg Weakness Or Difficulty Walking

Back pain that causes leg weakness or difficulty walking is a concerning symptom and requires immediate medical attention.

This can indicate a severe condition such as cauda equina syndrome. This medical emergency is caused by compression of the nerve roots at the lower end of the spinal cord. It can even result in permanent nerve damage.

8. You Have A Family History Of Cancer Or Osteoporosis

If you have a history of cancer or osteoporosis, your back pain may be related to these conditions.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Your doctor can determine the underlying cause of your back pain and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Some Tips To Relieve Back Pain

Back pain is a common condition caused by various factors, from poor posture to injury.

While it can be frustrating, there are steps you can take to manage your back pain and prevent further complications.

Stay Active

Regular exercise, particularly activities that strengthen the back and core muscles, can help reduce the frequency and severity of back pain.

Additionally, exercise has been shown to improve mood and reduce stress, which can contribute to back pain relief.

Practice Good Posture

Maintaining good posture, particularly when sitting or standing for extended periods, can help prevent back pain.

This includes sitting straight with your shoulders back, keeping your feet flat on the ground, and avoiding hunching or slouching.

Get Enough Sleep

A lack of sleep can worsen chronic pain, including back pain. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Observe Proper Body Mechanics

When lifting heavy objects or performing other activities that strain the back, use proper body mechanics to avoid injury.

This includes bending at the knees and using the legs to lift rather than bending over and using the back.

ManageYour Stress

Stress can contribute to back pain. Try managing stress through techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.

Consult Your Doctor

If your back pain persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, seeking medical attention is important. They can recommend treatments such as physical therapy. Your therapist can provide exercises and techniques to help manage your back pain.

Your provider may also suggest simple treatments like applying heat or cold to the affected area. Doing so can help alleviate pain and inflammation.
