Lower Back Pain in Women – Causes and Treatments

March 14, 2022

A young woman suffer with lower back pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints in the United States. It can be caused by a lot of factors, like bad posture, muscle and tendon strain, or obesity. Medical conditions like arthritis, scoliosis, sciatica, depression, and anxiety can also result in lower back pain. In addition, heavy lifting, overexerting yourself, and exercising with poor posture can contribute to the ache.

However, many lower back pains are specific to women like endometriosis, PID, and ovarian cysts. So, it’s important that you administer the proper treatment for whatever causes your back pain.

Let’s talk about the causes and treatment options for women-specific back pains and where you can go in DE to get rid of this pain and live a pain-free life.

Endometriosis

The cells lining your uterus, or womb, swell every month due to the hormones produced by your body. Endometriosis occurs when these cells grow nearby the internal organs, like your ovaries, fallopian tubes, or bladder, or attach to your bowel, rectum, pelvic area, or other areas of your body.

These cell growths may cause pelvic and lower back pain, even lasting for months. Endometriosis is also characterized by heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, or pain with urination, and bowel movements. It can also cause infertility.

Treatment

To date, there’s no cure for endometriosis as its exact cause is still unknown. However, there are multiple remedies available for women who experience it. The treatment may vary per woman- it mostly depends on your age and the symptoms you experience. Most mild cases of endometriosis may be handled with exercises, relaxation, and over-the-counter pain relievers.

Hormone therapy is another treatment option, but it is only recommended for women not trying to conceive. Your provider may suggest the followings:

  • Birth control pills can relieve symptoms
  • Progesterone pills, IUD, or hormone injections to help shrink cell growths, or
  • Gonadotropin medicines, agonists or antagonists can alter your ovaries’ estrogen
  • production level

If conservative treatments don’t make the pain better, surgery may be recommended.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, refers to the infection of a woman’s reproductive organs, such as the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It’s usually caused by sexually transmitted diseases, like chlamydia or gonorrhea.

Aside from lower back pain, PID is characterized by fever, bleeding even when not on your period, and painful urination. Pain during intercourse and longer and more severe period cramps are also indicative of this disease.

Treatment

Antibiotics are the only treatment for PID. You will need to abstain from intercourse while undergoing PID treatment.

You should use protection during intercourse to reduce your risks of developing PID. In addition, you should get tested for diseases regularly if you have an active sex life.

Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts refer to the cells that attach to or grow inside your ovaries. Some cysts develop because of your ovulation cycle, while others are caused by diseases, like:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS – ovaries produce too much of the male hormone called androgen
  • Ovarian cancer – a disease characterized by an abnormal growth of cells in the ovaries that destroy other healthy tissue

In addition to lower back pain, the cysts can cause painful menstruation, pain during sex, and bloating.

Treatment

Your provider may prescribe you medication that can stop your ovulation and prevent the formation of cysts. That includes birth control pills, injectables, and other hormone-regulating medication.

For severe cases, surgery may be recommended, such as:

  • Laparoscopy – a procedure requiring only a small incision to remove the cyst
  • Laparotomy – a surgery that uses a large incision to remove an ovarian cyst
