A Triple Threat to Eradicate Back Pain: Combine Chiropractic, Laser and Taping Therapies

April 20, 2018

Businesswoman with pain in back

Businesswoman with pain in backA staggering number of Americans – 116 million, to be precise – have suffered from musculoskeletal pain at some point in their lives, and it has left them yearning for an answer to this prevalent problem.

To help these patients avoid long recuperation periods, exorbitant expenses, and persistent pain, many physicians now opt for alternative treatments in lieu of more invasive orthopedic measures.

The benefits of chiropractic therapy are well-established. Millions have benefitted from spinal adjustments and other approaches delivered by a qualified chiropractor to treat complaints as varied as headaches, neck and back pain, and joint aches. And millions more are turning to the chiropractic approach every day.

Did you know there are additional therapies that can offer a trifold method to combat common, complex issues such as back pain? By combining chiropractic care with laser therapy and Kinesio Taping, you can deliver a knockout punch to quell your symptoms; it’s as easy as 1-2-3.

Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy, or Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), allows medical practitioners to reduce the discomfort and inflammation caused by myriad neuropathic disorders.

Unlike medications, which merely mask the pain, lasers promote healing by stimulating cells in the injured area, helping to normalize damaged tissue.

The in-office procedure involves using a hand-held device in which low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) penetrate tissue to stimulate cells in the target area. It is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and spasms – all while increasing mobility.

Plus, this procedure, which takes roughly 5 – 10 minutes, doesn’t require any incisions or scarring as is the case with invasive surgeries. In fact, this technique actually feels good, and has been compared to a gentle, soothing massage.

But don’t mistake LLLT for magic. While you may see a small decrease in inflammation following your first procedure, people with chronic conditions may require repeated sessions before they see significant results.

This FDA-approved treatment is a safe and painless solution for everything from sprains and strains to sciatica and sports-related injuries. Results from over 4,000 studies published with the National Library of Medicine have maintained that LLLT has a positive overall effect on both acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, although it is most beneficial when used as soon as possible following an injury.

Patients experiencing more severe pain may opt for treatment with a Class IV laser – called High-Power Laser Therapy, or HPLT.

HPLT is another safe, effective, and noninvasive use of laser therapy to reduce pain and inflammation. However, it differs from LLLT in significant ways:

  • HPLT penetrates further, to reach damaged tissue deep below the skin’s surface
  • HPLT delivers stronger therapeutic energy to address more severe injuries
  • HPLT requires shorter treatment times – it can treat a larger target area in a shorter amount of time

The deep-tissue laser therapy of HPLT has been used to treat complaints such as low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and tennis elbow – among others.

Therapeutic Taping

When the human body is injured, its lymphatic system sends fluid to the affected area, which can result in inflammation and swelling. This can put pressure on muscles, and cause pain and discomfort.

Many people, from professional athletes to weekend warriors, have found relief with Kinesio Taping (KT), a method that provides support to injured areas without restricting mobility.

It also happens to be a wonderful complement to laser therapy.

Developed by a Japanese chiropractor in the 1970s, the KT method of rehabilitation works in tandem with biomechanics, or natural muscle movements.

The meticulous application of special supportive tape to damaged regions of the body triggers increased blood flow and lymphatic drainage in the skin & fascia (the fibrous tissue that encapsulates a muscle).
