Helpful Tips and Advice for Migraine Treatments

February 24, 2023

Young man suffering from migraine at home

Migraine is a complex neurological condition that can cause various symptoms, including headache, that can be debilitating and distressing. If you are suffering from migraine, all you want during your migraine attacks is relief.

Thankfully, there are many things that you can do to prevent a migraine attack and relieve your migraine symptoms. Let’s talk about some helpful tips and advice you can follow for migraine treatment and where you can go for migration treatment in Delaware.

Tip #1 Identify Your Migraine Triggers and Avoid Them

This is the best thing you can do to keep your migraine attacks under control. To identify the migraine triggers, keep a log of when your migraine occurs and what initiates your migraine attacks.

Bright lights and extreme noise are the common triggers for migraine attacks. When you identify the particular trigger of your migraine attacks, avoid it by all means possible.

Tip #2 Find a Calm Environment

During the aura phase of your migraine attack – a phase in which migraine sufferer experiences sensory, visual, or motor disturbance before a migraine attack – take a break and step away from whatever you’re doing.

Also, during this phase, find a dark and quiet room, apply heat or cold compress to your neck or head, and sip a caffeinated drink to relieve migraine pain.

Tip #3 Manage Stress

According to an estimate, stress is the trigger in 7 out of 10 people with migraines. This means stress and migraine go hand in hand – stress can cause migraine, and migraine pain can worsen the stress, triggering another migraine attack.

While daily stressors are unavoidable, you can keep your stress under control by responding to them wisely.

To tame your stress, simplify your life by limiting your activities. Plus, indulge in exercise and meditation, and practice breathing techniques.

Tip #4 Take a Good Night Sleep

Poor nighttime sleep can trigger migraine – and even migraine can keep you from having a good nighttime sleep.

Sound sleep can ease migraine pain as your brain releases certain chemicals that block pain signals to the brain during sleep. So, to treat your migraine, have a sound sleep of seven to eight hours, as the American Migraine Foundation recommends.

You can promote sound sleep by:

  • Avoiding caffeinated products before bedtime
  • Establishing regular sleep hours
  • Doing things that help you sleep, such as reading a book and taking a warm bath
  • Lessening your bedroom distractions `

Tip #5 Mind What You Eat

For some people, eating specific foods trigger migraine episodes. Foods that can trigger migraine include alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, and processed meat. Surprisingly, hunger can also trigger a migraine attack.

So, if you suspect a certain food is triggering your migraine, do not eat that food. Also, don’t skip a meal; be consistent with your meals.

Tip #6 See a Pain Management Expert

If your migraine is not getting better with at-home treatments, seeing a pain management specialist is a good idea.

Pain management specialists can determine the type of migraine you are having and equip you with cognitive and behavioral strategies that can help you reduce the frequency of your migraine attacks and alleviate migraine symptoms.
