What Can I Expect from a PRP Procedure?

May 8, 2020

PRP Treatment

If you have an orthopedic condition such as a joint injury that is affecting your quality of life, PRP therapy may be the solution you are looking for. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that accelerates healing after an injury or surgery.

PRP therapy also helps reduce pain and inflammation, and it can help delay or eliminate the need for surgical procedures in many cases. PRP has become a successful orthopedic treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and related pain, including treating new and old injuries. It is already being widely used to help minimize joint pain.

What Happens in PRP Treatment?

A PRP procedure is a fairly quick treatment performed at medical centers and clinics. The doctor collects a blood sample from the patient, and the doctor then uses a centrifuge machine to separate and concentrate the platelets from the rest of the blood components.

The doctor then injects the isolated platelet-rich plasma directly into the damaged or injured area of the body that needs the PRP therapy. The session takes less than an hour, and patients are able to return to their daily activities immediately following the treatment.

For some patients, one PRP therapy treatment is enough to see positive results, such as reduced inflammation and pain. However, depending on the damage, specific needs, and medical history of the patient, multiple sessions of PRP therapy may be necessary for optimal results.

If this is the case, the PRP therapy sessions will be scheduled in intervals several weeks apart. Over time, the tissue will heal faster and more thoroughly, and the patient will notice less pain and inflammation.

PRP Offers a Very Low Risk

PRP therapy is a safe procedure with very little risk involved. Because the treatment is performed using only needles, there is no need for stitches. This reduces the risk of infections and additional pain from the procedure.

Additionally, because PRP therapy involves using the patient’s own blood for the procedure, there is virtually no risk of complications – because the body’s own healing mechanisms are used in the treatment instead of foreign content, which can cause unintended reactions.

Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Because PRP therapy doesn’t involve incisions or stitches, patients don’t have to worry about scarring and extended recovery periods. This makes the procedure safe for theoretically every part of the body.

Additionally, PRP therapy allows patients to return to their lives immediately after the appointment. This is great for patients with busy lifestyles who don’t have time to take off from work, school, or other commitments in order to have a medical procedure done.
